Plot
Set in the aftermath of shaky peace, Thunderbolts* brings together a ragtag crew of characters from across the MCU who’ve often been on the wrong side of the law—or at least morally grey. CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), facing political trouble and seeking leverage over a clandestine superhuman project, sends antiheroes Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Antonia Dreykov / Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) to infiltrate an O.X.E. facility. Their mission is rigged—she expects them to be exposed or destroyed. Unexpectedly, they escape the trap, along with Bob Reynolds (Sentry), an amnesiac with great power. As the group flees and fights, they’re forced to face the ghosts of their pasts—the wrongs they committed, the people they failed, and what kind of heroism, redemption, or backlash their choices demand. The film builds toward a transformation: what begins as a government-sanctioned antihero team evolves toward something more, culminating in a reveal that the group has been rebranded in the mid-credits as The New Avengers, suggesting that their journey is not just about survival or atonement—but redefining what a hero can be.
