Plot
The Outrun follows Rona, who, after years living on the edge in London and battling alcohol addiction, returns home to the wild beauty of the Orkney Islands in Scotland to heal. Haunted by memories of childhood, loss, and her life in the city, she seeks solace in the remote landscape where she grew up. Once back, she begins work with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) on Papa Westray, one of the most remote islands, where she lives alone through a harsh winter. As Rona reconnects with nature, observing seabirds, seaweed biology, and the rhythms of island life, she faces both the harshness of isolation and the pull of old habits. Her past relationships, especially with her parents — her mother Annie, her father Andrew — and her ex-boyfriend Daynin, surface in flashbacks and fragile moments. Through non-linear storytelling that blends memory, hallucination, and everyday ritual, the film offers a poetic, raw examination of addiction, identity, belonging, and what it takes to attempt recovery.
