Plot

In Nightmare Alley (2021), Stanton “Stan” Carlisle, a charismatic but down-on-his-luck man, joins a traveling carnival. Under the guidance of the carnival’s mentalist, Zeena, and her alcoholic husband, Pete, Stan hones his skills in manipulating and reading people. After mastering their tricks, he leaves the carnival with fellow performer Molly to start a high-class mentalism act in the city. Using his talents, Stan swindles the rich, leading to a partnership with a mysterious and dangerous psychiatrist, Dr. Lilith Ritter. Together, they target a wealthy tycoon, Ezra Grindle, with Stan posing as a medium to extract his secrets. However, as Stan becomes entangled in Lilith’s manipulations, his greed and ambition lead him down a path of deception and ruin. Ultimately, Stan’s world collapses, resulting in his return to the carnival, where he is destined to become the very attraction he once despised: the geek.
