Plot
Maestro traces the deeply complicated and passionate relationship between the celebrated composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein (Bradley Cooper) and his wife Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan). The story begins when they meet in 1946 and follows their journey through marriage, successes, infidelities, disagreements, and artistic triumphs. Bernstein’s artistic life—writing, conducting, creating—is juxtaposed with his personal life, showing how his genius carries both beauty and burden. The film delves into the tension between public performance and private vulnerability, as Bernstein struggles with his identity, sexuality, and fame, while Felicia balances her own career, motherhood, and loyalty. Their relationship is shown as not just love, but negotiation: of ego, passion, regret, and support over decades. Alongside major musical milestones and public pressures, Maestro is as much about the intimate cost of greatness as the glory—how creativity and charisma can both inspire and wound.
