Plot
Set in 1920s Oklahoma, Killers of the Flower Moon tells the true-story of the Osage Nation murders, a series of brutal killings of wealthy Osage people after oil is discovered beneath their land. Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio), nephew of William “King” Hale (Robert De Niro), becomes deeply intertwined in the scheme as Hale befriends and courts Mollie Burkhart (Lily Gladstone), Ernest’s Osage wife. With greed fueling Hale’s ambition, Mollie’s family members begin dying under suspicious circumstances—poisonings, murders, and slow conspiracies. When Mollie tries to fight back, she faces systemic corruption, betrayal, and institutionalized racism. The newly-formed FBI steps in to investigate, uncovering the horrifying extent of the “Reign of Terror.” Throughout, the film explores themes of power, exploitation, and moral complicity, as well as the emotional and cultural trauma inflicted on the Osage community. Scorsese paints not just a crime story, but a deeply human story of love, identity, and justice amid one of America’s darkest chapters.
