Plot
Fancy Dance follows Jax (Lily Gladstone), a resilient Indigenous woman on the Seneca-Cayuga reservation, as she cares for her 13-year-old niece, Roki (Isabel Deroy-Olson), after her sister Tawi’s disappearance. Unable to get law enforcement to open a missing persons case due to Tawi’s history of vanishing, Jax and Roki resort to stealing cars to survive. When child protective services intervene, Roki is placed in the custody of her estranged white grandfather, Frank (Shea Whigham). Determined to find her sister and keep her family together, Jax kidnaps Roki and embarks on a journey to a powwow in Oklahoma City, hoping to find Tawi. Along the way, they face challenges that test their bond and resilience. The film explores themes of family, identity, and the systemic issues affecting Indigenous communities, highlighting the strength and determination of its characters.
