Plot

12 Years a Slave (2012) follows the true story of Solomon Northup, a free African-American man living in New York in 1841. Solomon, a skilled violinist, is deceived by two men offering him work and is kidnapped, sold into slavery in the South. Stripped of his identity, he is renamed Platt and endures the brutal conditions of life as a slave on cotton plantations in Louisiana. Facing unimaginable cruelty from slave owners, particularly the sadistic Edwin Epps, Solomon struggles to survive while clinging to hope of freedom. Over the years, he witnesses the horrors faced by fellow slaves, including the tragic fate of Patsey, a young woman repeatedly abused by Epps. Solomon’s resolve never wavers, and after 12 years, a chance encounter with a Canadian abolitionist leads to his rescue. Reunited with his family, Solomon’s story exposes the brutal reality of slavery in America.
