Plot
Memento (2000) follows Leonard Shelby, a man suffering from short-term memory loss, as he seeks to avenge his wife’s murder. He cannot form new memories, so he uses Polaroid photographs, notes, and tattoos to keep track of facts and clues. The film uniquely unfolds in reverse chronological order, revealing key events backward to mimic Leonard’s disoriented perception. Leonard believes he’s hunting his wife’s killer, a man named John G. As the story progresses, it becomes clear that Leonard’s condition is exploited by others for their own ends. Teddy, who claims to be a friend, and Natalie, a woman with her own motives, manipulate Leonard. The narrative twists reveal that Leonard might have already found and killed the real John G. years earlier, but his condition and obsessive need for purpose keep him trapped in a cycle of vengeance, questioning the nature of truth and memory.
