Plot

“The Green Mile” (1999) is a drama set in 1935 at Cold Mountain Penitentiary’s death row, overseen by prison guard Paul Edgecomb. The plot revolves around John Coffey, a gentle giant with mysterious healing abilities, convicted of raping and murdering two young girls. As Edgecomb and his colleagues witness Coffey’s miraculous powers, their skepticism turns to belief, questioning his guilt. Coffey’s supernatural acts, including healing Edgecomb’s urinary infection and reviving a dead mouse, suggest his innocence. The story intertwines with other inmates’ lives, such as the psychotic Wild Bill and the tragic Delacroix. In a climactic revelation, Coffey’s innocence is confirmed, but he accepts his fate, believing his death will bring peace. The film ends with an aged Edgecomb reflecting on the events, burdened by the knowledge of Coffey’s wrongful execution and the inexplicable mysteries of life and death.
